Out of 96 local businesses nominated by the community, Highland Ground Works earned 132 votes to secure the top spot. While the voting may be over, the result probably won't surprise many Cottage Grove residents.

Meet Justin Foster
To help the community learn more about the person behind Highland Ground Works, I asked Justin a few questions about his background, the business, and what it means to serve the community he has called home his entire life.
Tell us a little about yourself and how Highland Ground Works got started?
"My name is Justin Foster and I’ve called Cottage Grove home for all of my life. My wife Rebekah and I raised our three children here in Cottage Grove. During those earlier years I built my career at Weyerhaeuser, working first as a journeyman millwright and later a licensed electrician.
After our kids were grown, I felt it was the right time to start something new. Growing up, I spent many years helping my dad with his landscaping business, so I was already familiar with the work and the satisfaction that comes from making an outdoor space look great. I’ve always enjoyed being outdoors, working with my hands, and helping people in my community. Starting my own landscaping business felt like a natural fit and an opportunity to continue working in the community I love."
What services do you offer, and what types of projects do you enjoy working on most?
"Highland Ground Works provides a wide range of services, including lawn maintenance, seasonal cleanups, brush removal, tree and shrub trimming, driveway and ditch maintenance, rototilling, field mowing, fencing, and stump grinding.
One of the things I enjoy most about this business is the variety in the work. Some customers call with a single project in mind, which keeps every day different and interesting. Others trust me with ongoing landscape maintenance throughout the year. Those long-term relationships are especially rewarding because I get to see properties transform and stay beautiful over time."
What's the most rewarding part of helping local property owners?
"Beyond the work itself, one of the best parts of the job is the opportunity to meet and work with so many great people in our community. Building those connections while helping customers improve and maintain their properties is what makes this work so fulfilling."
What makes Highland Ground Works different from other companies in the industry?
"What sets Highland Groundworks apart from other landscaping businesses in the area is the versatility of the services we provide. As a licensed, bonded, and insured contractor with a CCB license, I’m able to offer a wide range of services, from lawn care and landscape maintenance to tree work and property improvement projects."
What's something people should know before hiring someone for land management, brush clearing, driveway work, or similar projects?
"I also believe that being an engaged member of this community makes a difference. Growing up here and raising my family here has given me strong ties to the people of Cottage Grove. Hiring someone to work on your property requires trust, and I understand the importance of earning that trust. Putting time into getting to know my customers, really understanding what they are looking for and providing dependable service that I am proud of has helped me establish a reputation that customers can feel confident in."
When you're not working, what do you enjoy doing around Cottage Grove and the surrounding area?
"When I’m not working, my wife and I enjoy spending time outdoors fishing, camping, and backpacking. Most of all, though, we love spending time with our grandbabies. We also have a small farm where we care for our Highland cows, Pearl and Cash, along with a handful of other animals that help keep us busy."
Anything exciting coming up for Highland Ground Works or anything you'd like the community to know?
"Looking ahead, Highland Groundwork’s is excited to continue serving the community, building new relationships, and doing more of the work I genuinely enjoy. I’m incredibly grateful for the support I’ve received and want to extend a giant thank you to everyone who voted for Highland Groundworks as business of the month and to all of my customers who continuously show Highland Groundwork’s support. I look forward to continuing to serve our community for years to come."
