August 2026 Local Legend: Tom Perkins
Every month, Groovin' in the Grove recognizes someone who has made a positive impact on Cottage Grove. These are the people who quietly give their time, support others, and help make our community a better place.
This month, the community voted to recognize Tom Perkins as August's Local Legend.
If you've been involved with South Valley Athletics over the years, chances are you've crossed paths with Tom. Whether coaching, volunteering, serving on the board, or leading the organization as Program Director, Tom has dedicated nearly two decades to helping local kids and families.
Below is Tom's story, shared in his own words.
Tell us a little about yourself. We'd love to learn about your family, career, hobbies, how long you've lived in Cottage Grove, and anything else you'd like the community to know.
I am a father of two adult children. I am the Program Director at South Valley Athletics. Born and raised in and around Cottage Grove. I love our community!
Many people in Cottage Grove know your name, but everyone has a story. Can you tell us a little about your journey and what led you to become involved in the community?
In 2006 my dad got me involved volunteering with Party in the Park. I loved the feeling of giving freely of my time to make our community a better stronger place.I started coaching with SVA in 2007. Volunteering had a huge impact on my life and who I am. After my kids aged out of SVA I was asked to join the board and in 2022 I applied for and got the Grant funded position of Program Director.
What do you enjoy most about living in and being part of the Cottage Grove community?
I love everything about Cottage Grove. We are a unique, beautiful community.
Looking back over the years, what accomplishment, experience, or moment in your life are you most proud of?
I am very proud of the thousands of young lives and families I have been able to serve over the years.
What motivates you to give back to others, and what has community service or helping people meant to you personally?
Many people, teachers, coaches, and mentors have contributed to my life over the years, and it feels good and right to pay it forward.
What's one piece of advice or a life lesson you'd like to pass along to younger generations or anyone reading this?
One piece of advice I would like to pass on to younger generations pay attention to your health, both physical and mental. Eat well, exercise, and rest. Find things that you are passionate about, art, recreation, etc. let that ignite your spark and don’t let anything extinguish it.
Is there anyone you'd like to thank or recognize for supporting you throughout your life?
I have to thank my family for always giving me the only things that matter in this life, love and respect.
Finally, is there anything else you'd like to share with the Cottage Grove community?
Cottage Grove is a beautiful, strong community. Don’t listen to those that would have us divided. This is a good place to live and raise a family. No matter what we believe, how different we may seem, we can all agree to look out for each other and our wonderful home.
Why Tom Was Chosen
One of the best parts about the Local Legend program is learning more about the people so many of us already know.
Tom's story started in 2006 when his dad encouraged him to volunteer at Party in the Park. That decision led to coaching with South Valley Athletics in 2007, serving on the organization's board, and eventually becoming Program Director in 2022.
When asked what he's most proud of, Tom didn't mention awards, championships, or titles. Instead, he said he's most proud of the thousands of young lives and families he's been able to serve.
That answer says a lot.
For nearly twenty years, Tom has dedicated his time to helping young athletes build confidence, learn teamwork, and grow both on and off the field. His impact reaches far beyond sports, and it's one of the many reasons the Cottage Grove community chose to recognize him as August's Local Legend.
Congratulations, Tom, and thank you for everything you've done for Cottage Grove.
Congratulations, Tom!
On behalf of Groovin' in the Grove and the Cottage Grove community, congratulations on being selected as August's Local Legend.
Thank you for your years of service, your dedication to local youth, and for continuing to make Cottage Grove a better place to call home.
