July 2026 Local Legend: Larry "The Legend" Horner
Every month, Groovin' in the Grove recognizes someone who has made a lasting impact on Cottage Grove. Sometimes that impact comes through volunteer work. Other times it comes through supporting local traditions, local youth, or simply spending a lifetime serving the community they call home.
This month, the community voted, and I'm proud to introduce July's Local Legend, Larry "The Legend" Horner.
For many people around Cottage Grove, Larry needs no introduction. Whether you've visited Horner's Inc., attended the Logging Show, or simply crossed paths with him over the years, chances are you've experienced the kindness, knowledge, and dedication that have earned him the nickname, "The Legend."
Tell us a little about yourself. (Family, career, hobbies, how long you've lived in Cottage Grove, or anything else you'd like people to know?)
I was born here in Cottage Grove. I joined the Air Force and spent time in Vietnam, Thailand, New Mexico, Germany, California, and Colorado.
Returning home, I started my career working in saw shops. I worked in Lakeview, Roseburg, Coos Bay, Canada, along with Cottage Grove.
I started my own saw shop, Horner's Inc., in 1974, and it is now in its fourth location at 79132 OR-99, Cottage Grove, OR 97424. I have had more than 50 years serving my community.
My hobbies have been hunting, fishing, kart racing, shooting at the gun club, and woodworking. Dogs have been an important part of my life, and my favorite breed is "mutt"!
What do you enjoy most about being part of the Cottage Grove community?
I enjoy being part of a small community and knowing so many of the people who live here.
What inspired you to get involved and give back to the community?
The Logging Show and Fair have always been important to me. They showcase our area's livelihood.
Along with organizing and supporting the Logging Show, I also competed. Children's sports are important to me, and I have always supported our local teams.
What accomplishment or moment in your life are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my family.
What's one piece of advice or life lesson you'd like to share?
Trust your gut.
Is there anything else you'd like to say to the Cottage Grove community?
My shop is a place to meet friends, get expert advice and equipment, and a wonderful place to view antique saws and equipment!
Why Larry Was Chosen
Larry was born and raised right here in Cottage Grove.
He served his country in the United States Air Force before returning home and building a business that has served the community for more than 50 years. Through Horner's Inc., he has helped generations of loggers, mill workers, landowners, and outdoor enthusiasts while becoming a trusted source of knowledge and quality equipment.
His impact extends well beyond his business.
For years, Larry has been involved with the Logging Show and Fair, helping support one of Cottage Grove's longest-standing traditions while also competing himself. He has also been a longtime supporter of local youth sports, believing in the importance of investing in future generations.
Walk into Horner's Inc. and you'll quickly discover it's more than just a saw shop. It's a gathering place where friends reconnect, stories are shared, advice is freely given, and visitors can admire an impressive collection of antique saws and equipment that helps preserve the history of our region's logging industry.
It's people like Larry who quietly help shape a community over the course of a lifetime.
Not for recognition.
Not for attention.
Simply because they care.
That's why so many people around Cottage Grove simply call him "The Legend."
